Chapter 215: Nervous nurse
Chapter 215: Nervous nurse
Humans.
Tall, broad, and silent.
All he saw were rows of men standing inside, with neither words nor movement permitted.
They all wore hospital gowns. Yet the fact that they remained standing so perfectly still, like lifeless corpses, was deeply unsettling.
And judging by their complexion, Kyle knew they weren’t dead.
What disturbed him even more was the eerie similarity in their features, as though they had been crafted rather than born.
His gaze swept across the room. Nearly fifty such men stood there, evenly spaced apart. Even after five seconds of careful observation, he failed to detect the slightest movement.
He could see heavy surveillance inside the room and the floating clouds suggested the room was kept incredibly cold for some reason.
Other than that, he could see equipment for surgery nearby as well. Things like cutters and bandages.
"Kyle?" Layena called out. "Do you sense something strange?"
Her voice pulled his attention away from the room, and he let out a quiet sigh.
"No, it’s nothing." He dismissed God’s Eye before turning to them.
Explaining how he could see beyond a thick concrete wall would only invite more questions. So he left it at that and urged them forward.
"Let’s get going."
Amanda looked thoughtful, but she didn’t say anything.
As the two walked past the door, Kyle cast one last glance at the wall.
Now he understood why the hospital had gone to such lengths to secure this place.
But what in the world were they?
Some kind of human-shaped training dummies? Or something far more dangerous?
And then there was the stench he had sensed from them. It felt as though he were standing inside a morgue... no, perhaps something even worse.
Should I ask Veronica about it?
He didn’t want to raise a false alarm or stick his nose into matters that didn’t concern him, but this felt genuinely unsettling. Besides, the hospital was supposed to have ties to the PSC.
"Kyle, are you going to eat something now?" Amanda asked, breaking his train of thought. "I can go buy some porridge for you."
"But half of what I brought is still left," Layena pointed out.
Kyle nodded.
"I’ll eat that."
Amanda nearly clicked her tongue in annoyance. Crossing her arms, she asked, "Wouldn’t that have gone cold by now?"
Layena shook her head. "That container is thermally insulated. It should still be quite warm."
Amanda rolled her eyes.
Look at this woman, practically eager to have Kyle eat her food.
Well, Amanda had already tasted it herself and knew Layena hadn’t added anything strange or "fun" to the food.
And since Kyle seemed to like it, there was no reason to create an unnecessary scene.
Soon, the elevator came to a stop on their floor, and they found someone waiting on the other side.
"Melissa?" Layena called out. "Is everything alright?"
It was a nurse. Judging by Layena’s tone, the two were familiar with each other.
"Y-Yes... umm, Layena..." Melissa stammered. "Can I have the access card back? My senior asked about it."
Her face was noticeably pale, and her fingers trembled faintly at her sides.
Kyle narrowed his eyes. Amanda and Layena also picked up on how strange she was acting.
Still, Kyle didn’t make her wait. He reached into his pocket and handed over the access card.
Amanda, however, wasn’t willing to let the matter drop.
"That place is hidden away pretty well," she said. "What’s so special about that section?"
Melissa nearly fumbled the card as she took it. After a brief struggle, she straightened her posture and shook her head vigorously.
"Nothing at all. It’s just the plants you must have seen. The chief surgeon had them planted there. That’s why the rooftop is forbidden to everyone."
"And yet every staff member has an access card for it, huh..." Amanda muttered under her breath.
The more she thought about it, the more absurd the entire explanation sounded.
The nurse didn’t linger for long.
Wiping the sweat from her forehead, she forced out a smile.
"Then... I’ll see you later, Layena."
With that, she repeatedly pressed the elevator button.
The moment the doors slid open, she hurried inside and disappeared just as quickly, leaving in the same panicked state.
The three of them stood there in silence for a moment.
Layena narrowed her eyes.
"She’s usually not rude. I don’t know what exactly happened to her."
Kyle let out a quiet sigh.
"Well... I might have an idea."
As he spoke, he turned and glanced over his shoulder.
[There are more than twelve cameras on this floor, Host.]
Kyle nodded inwardly.
I know.
A floor dedicated to treating Nightwalkers would naturally be under heavy surveillance.
But surveillance could serve more than one purpose.
If the hospital staff and doctors were truly hiding those humanoid figures, then mentioning them here would be a terrible idea. If anyone was monitoring the cameras, drawing attention to what he had seen could easily make him a target.
Layena looked at him with a puzzled expression.
"What do you mean?"
Kyle flashed an easy smile.
"I mean, she risked her job by lending us that card. And with all those cameras constantly watching us, someone probably reported her."
Layena followed his gaze and looked in the direction he had subtly indicated before slowly nodding in understanding.
Kyle then urged them forward.
"Let’s get back to the room. I need to take my meds."
"Right."
"Right."
Layena and Amanda responded at the same time, both sounding unexpectedly urgent.
A hint of bitterness flashed across Amanda’s face before she grabbed Kyle’s hand and started leading him toward the room.
Layena moved to follow, only for Amanda to suddenly glance back at her.
"Isn’t it time for you to leave?"
"Amanda..." Kyle gently reprimanded. "Don’t be so mean to her."
Layena smiled faintly.
"No, she’s right, Kyle. It’s already quite late, and as long as I’m here, you won’t be able to relax properly."
Kyle shook his head.
"It’s not like that. You’re overthinking things."
A soft chuckle escaped her lips.
The sound surprised Amanda. It might have been the first time she had actually heard Layena laugh.
"It’s okay," Layena said. "I only came here to make sure you’re safe. Now that I know you are, I can finally go back and relax."
Kyle smiled in return.
Then he stepped closer and wrapped his free arm around her back, pulling her into a warm hug.
"I’m glad you came," he said. "And please take care of yourself too, okay?"
Layena froze for a moment, clearly caught off guard.
A faint warmth spread across her cheeks as she closed her eyes and softly hummed in acknowledgment.
"I will."
She didn’t stay any longer than that.
After giving him a small wave, she entered the elevator and soon disappeared from sight.
When Kyle turned back toward Amanda, his smile became helpless at the sight of her puffed-up cheeks.
Chuckling, he decided to focus his attention on his big baby, who was very clearly feeling neglected.
