Chapter 143: The Person Behind it All
Chapter 143: The Person Behind it All
RION
Keigan assured me for the third time that Vivien was okay before I finally decided to leave the infirmary. I told Ares to assign warriors around the castle and instructed Raye to stay with Vivien, then Ares and I went aboveground.
Reaching the top of the tower, my jaw clenched when I saw our warriors, led by Diaval, standing beyond the tower.
About a hundred yards away was a huge pack of wolves.
"These people... they are from our continent. They are Arysian wolves," Ares muttered.
My blood boiled. How did they break through my wards? What the hell happened in the short time I wasn’t in the Undercity? Is the entire continent under attack?
In the next moment, I was no longer on the tower but standing below, next to Diaval, who was in his wolf form. He gave me a curt bow along with many of our warriors.
The big brown wolf across the clearing grumbled, taking a step forward, as if showing me he was the leader of the pack.
But I was sure he wasn’t the Alpha King. I had never been to the continent across the western seas, but from the information I had gathered, Darec, the Arysian Alpha King, had grey and white fur with light amber eyes.
’Greetings, Alpha of Undercity,’ the brown wolf said. ’It’s a pleasure to finally meet you. I am Lorcan, a Beta from the Arysian continent. I have to admit, your wards were pretty strong. They weren’t easy to break. All the packs in your continent have fallen, with their people under our mercy. Yours is the last one standing. Soon, our Alpha King will come here to see the last Diaj pack meet its demise.’
My warriors growled in anger. Diaval was silent beside me, but I could feel his paws digging into the snow.
I smirked, though my eyes were hollow.
’I don’t care if those packs have fallen under your mercy, but if you bastards think you can do the same to my pack, you’re dreaming,’ I said with pure animosity behind my smile. My gaze sharpened like daggers ready to carve into their hearts.
’I heard from the other packs that the Celestial Wolf appeared in the Levian Pack about a week ago. And that girl is under your care now. Where is she? I’m curious how she looks, and if she is as powerful as the legend says.’
My shadows grew larger around me, responding to the anger simmering inside me.
’So it was your people,’ I said, my eyes narrowing. ’It was you Arysian bastards who sent that corpse puppet and that spy into my territory. What you want in my continent is not our lands, but the Celestial Wolf. That’s why you are looking for the keys. I wonder, though... how did your king find out about the Book of Keys?’
The Arysian wolf laughed. ’You are right. We sent those dumb puppets to your place to get the keys, but that didn’t work. Our Alpha King figured we don’t need those petty tricks. We can just attack your continent and get what we need. We have been preparing for this. We have always wanted to reclaim our lost pride after you Diaj wolves trampled on us some time ago. Your lands will be claimed as ours, and soon all of your people will become slaves. How does that sound?’
My patience was running thin. I couldn’t leave Vivien for long in her unknown state.
’Pardon me, but I don’t have much time to waste on you.’
I let shadows burst out from my palms, and in just a matter of seconds they grew a hundred times bigger, streaking across the clearing.
Before the Arysian wolves could react, the shadows divided themselves and became wisps that coiled around each wolf’s neck, strangling them with such force they could only howl in pain.
’If it was another time, I would have spared a bit more time to play with you, but this is not the right time for games.’
My warriors growled in satisfaction as we watched the Arysian wolves die by my shadows alone.
Soon, the wolves fell onto the snowy ground with either their necks broken or their bodies decapitated.
The wind blew, and my warriors’ cheer faded when someone spoke through the mist beyond the dead bodies of hundreds of Arysian wolves.
As the mist obscuring the figure dispersed, someone emerged.
He was clad in white clothes, his hair dark as ebony, and his eyes light amber.
Despite the distance, I could see his features clearly. He seemed to be a middle-aged man, and I could smell his wolf’s strong scent.
"You have amazed me, Alpha of Undercity. Rion Morrigan, isn’t it? Morrigan... hmm... that’s a familiar surname. You must have hailed from the old Clan Morrigan."
"Alpha King Darec. You must be him," I said. A smile curled on my lips. "To what do I owe this pleasure? It is very rare for me to have an important guest." I glanced at his hundreds of dead warriors. "I hope you don’t mind the mess."
Darec waved his hand once. "Sure, I don’t mind at all."
He tilted his head. "Why would I?"
Right that moment, something extraordinary happened. The corpses of the Arysian wolves slowly rose from the ground. They were still in their wolf forms, but something was eerie about them. Their eyes were hollow and became a darker shade of gold, and they moved like they were... puppets.
And their scent... they didn’t smell like living creatures.
They smelled like they belonged to the earth. Like they were dead.
At that moment, I pieced it together. It was the Arysian Alpha’s power. He could use dead people as his puppets. That was why he was so calm and composed even after I had killed hundreds of his warriors. He could still use them just the same.
However, the fact that he didn’t care whether they were alive or not, as long as they could fight for him, made me feel sick.
This motherfucker deserved the best room in hell.
