The kiss was entirely consuming.
It was as if a dam had broken inside the massive Black Panther Alpha.
Hei Yan’s large hands gripped her waist, his thumbs pressing into her sides as he completely devoured her lips.
"Hei Yan—" Xin Yi gasped, breaking the kiss for a fraction of a second to catch her breath.
But Hei Yan wasn’t done. He chased her lips, his fangs gently grazing her jawline.
"Mine," Hei Yan whispered against her skin, his voice thick with raw need. "You are mine, Xin Yi. Tell me you still want me."
"I do, I do," she breathed out, her hands gripping his broad shoulders tightly.
She could feel the heat radiating from him, melting away the cool evening breeze. But as his hands started to wander lower, pulling her hips flush against his, a sudden, very prominent realization crashed into Xin Yi’s hazy brain.
They were sitting in the middle of a construction site.
Next to a crackling fire.

Another thick branch was aggressively snapped in half from across the fire. A low, terrifying hiss echoed through the camp.

Hei Yan didn’t even turn his head. He didn’t care about the Snake. He didn’t care about the Lions. He only cared about the soft, warm female currently sitting in his lap.
But if she wanted privacy, he would give her privacy.
Before Xin Yi could even blink, Hei Yan shifted his grip. He scooped her up into his arms, holding her bridal-style against his chest, and stood up.
"Hey! Where are you going?!" Sha Chen yelled from the other side of the camp, grabbing his spear.
"Put her down, you oversized housecat!" Qing Lin roared, throwing the broken branch into the fire.
Hei Yan ignored them all. With a powerful leap that kicked up a cloud of dust, the Panther Alpha completely vanished into the tall, golden elephant grass, carrying Xin Yi into the darkness.
"Hei Yan!" Xin Yi squeaked, wrapping her arms tightly around his neck as he sprinted through the savanna. The wind rushed past her ears, the sounds of the chaotic camp quickly fading into the distance.
Within minutes, the dry grass gave way to a secluded, rocky enclave hidden beneath the shade of massive, drooping willow trees.
It was the savanna’s watering hole.
Hei Yan didn’t stop until they were completely hidden behind a large, smooth rock formation.
He set her down carefully, his back pressing her gently against the cool stone. He didn’t waste a single second. His hands framed her face.
"No one is watching now," Hei Yan murmured.
He captured her lips again, and this time, Xin Yi didn’t stop him. She melted against the stone, her fingers tangling into his thick, dark hair, pulling him closer.

Hei Yan’s hands mapped her body as if he was memorizing her all over again. He trailed kisses down her jaw, his lips pressing hotly against her neck. He inhaled deeply, his nose brushing her collarbone.
"You smell like him," Hei Yan growled softly, a flash of primal jealousy lacing his tone. He kissed the spot where Qing Lin had undoubtedly marked her days ago. "I am going to wash his scent away. I am going to cover you in mine."
"Hei Yan..." Xin Yi moaned, her head falling back against the rock.
He lifted her easily, resting her securely against the curve of the stone. The cool night air brushed against her skin as he quickly discarded his leather harness, his heavily scarred, muscular chest glistening in the moonlight.
When he finally claimed her, it was with an overwhelming reverence.
He wasn’t rough, despite his massive size. He worshipped her, moving with a steady heat that completely consumed her senses. Xin Yi cried out his name, her nails scratching down his broad back, anchoring herself to him as the world around them blurred into nothing but moonlight and shadows.
"Xin Yi," he panted, his forehead resting against hers.
Hei Yan buried his face into the crook of her neck. His sharp fangs descended, grazing the incredibly sensitive skin right above her pulse point.
He didn’t break the skin immediately. He nuzzled it, waiting for her to arch her neck, offering herself to him completely.
Then, he bit down.
"Ah!" Xin Yi gasped, her eyes flying wide open as a pinch radiated through her body, instantly followed by a wave of pure, absolute euphoria.
It was the Alpha’s mark. The warmth of his claim flooded her veins, washing away her exhaustion, her stress, and her fears.
Hei Yan held the bite for a few seconds before slowly pulling back. He soothingly licked the twin puncture marks, sealing the bond.
With one final, powerful thrust, Hei Yan stiffened, a deep roar of absolute pleasure tearing from his throat. Xin Yi shattered completely around him, seeing stars as she clung to his broad shoulders, riding out the overwhelming wave of ecstasy.
For a long time, the only sound in the secluded oasis was their heavy, ragged breathing and the gentle chirping of the savanna crickets.
Hei Yan slowly lowered them both to the soft grass near the water’s edge. He pulled her against his chest, wrapping his arms around her in a protective, inescapable cocoon.
He was smiling.
It was a wide, brilliant, incredibly goofy smile that made him look like a giant, completely satisfied puppy. He nuzzled his nose into her hair, his chest rumbling with an endless, contented purr.
"Mine," Hei Yan whispered happily, pressing a soft kiss to her forehead. "You bear my mark again. You are my mate. The Snake can hiss all he wants, but he cannot change this."
Xin Yi let out an exhausted, completely blissful laugh. She rested her hand on his chest, feeling the steady, calming beat of his heart.
"You are so possessive," she teased softly, tracing one of his old scars with her fingertip.
"I am a Panther," he replied simply.
Xin Yi closed her eyes, the cool breeze from the watering hole washing over them.

He didn’t answer. His purple eyes narrowed, staring up into the darkness.
A massive shadow fell over them, entirely blocking out the moonlight.
Someone was standing on top of the rock formation, directly above where they were resting.
